If you've been scrolling through fitness content in Singapore lately, you've probably come across the term "infrared heated pilates" — and wondered what on earth it actually means. Is it just hot yoga with a rebrand? Is the infrared part real, or just marketing?

We get these questions every week at Dopamine Movement, Singapore's infrared heated mat pilates studio. So here's a complete, honest guide to what infrared heated pilates actually is, how it works, and whether it's worth trying.

What is infrared heated sculpt pilates?

Infrared heated pilates is exactly what it sounds like — mat pilates performed in a studio heated by infrared technology rather than conventional heaters or hot air systems.

The key word here is infrared. Unlike a sauna or a hot yoga room that heats the air around you (which can feel stuffy and overwhelming), infrared heat works by warming your body directly from the inside out — similar to the way sunlight warms your skin on a cool day. The air temperature in the room stays relatively comfortable, but your muscles, joints, and tissues warm up deeply and quickly.

At Dopamine Movement, we combine this infrared heat with structured mat pilates movements focused on strength, mobility, and sculpt — using exclusive BALA equipment imported directly from the United States.

How is infrared heat different from a regular hot room?

This is the question we get most often, and it's a good one.

In a conventional hot room (like a Bikram yoga studio), large heaters or steam systems raise the air temperature of the room. You feel hot because the air around you is hot. This can make breathing feel harder, especially if you're not used to it, and some people find it claustrophobic.

Infrared heat is completely different. The panels heat your body directly — your skin, muscles, and tissues absorb the infrared wavelengths and warm up from within. The surrounding air stays cooler and more breathable. This means you get the deep muscle-warming benefits without the suffocating heavy heat that puts many people off hot classes.

Think of it this way: standing in direct sunlight on a 25°C day feels warm and energising. Standing in a 40°C room with hot air blowing on you feels suffocating. Infrared is the sunshine version of heat.

What are the benefits of infrared heated pilates?

When you combine the therapeutic properties of infrared heat with the precision of mat pilates, the results compound on each other. Here's what our members consistently experience:

Deeper muscle activation. The infrared heat warms your muscles before you even begin moving. This means your body is ready to engage deeper muscle fibres earlier in the class — the muscles that are typically hard to "switch on" in a cold studio.

Improved flexibility and range of motion. Warm muscles are more pliable. You'll notice you can move further into stretches and hold positions that might otherwise feel restricted.

Accelerated calorie burn. Your body works harder to regulate its temperature in a heated environment, which increases your heart rate and metabolic demand — even during low-impact movements. A 45-minute infrared sculpt class burns significantly more calories than the equivalent class at room temperature.

Reduced muscle soreness. Infrared heat promotes blood circulation and helps flush out metabolic waste products from your muscles, which means you typically recover faster and feel less sore the next day.

Detoxification through sweat. You will sweat — genuinely and properly — during an infrared heated class. This isn't just surface moisture; the deeper body heat promotes the kind of sweating that helps your body release toxins stored in tissues.

Better stress relief. Infrared heat has a calming effect on the nervous system. Many of our members report that the combination of focused movement and gentle heat leaves them feeling clearer and calmer than any other workout they do.

What is sculpt mat pilates class, and why does it work so well with infrared?

Pilates is a method of exercise that focuses on controlled, precise movements to build core strength, improve posture, and develop full-body coordination. Mat pilates is the original form of pilates — performed on the floor using your own bodyweight, with or without small props. Sculpt is the contemporary take that incorporates more mobility and strength (weight loaded) movement into the repertoire.

At Dopamine Movement, we use BALA equipment in our mat pilates classes — weighted bangles, bars, and beams designed to add resistance to your movements without changing the low-impact, joint-friendly nature of pilates. BALA is a premium fitness brand from the United States known for its beautifully designed, highly effective weighted equipment. We are the only studio in Singapore using BALA equipment exclusively in our classes.

The reason infrared and mat pilates work so well together comes down to muscle readiness. Pilates asks your body to work with precision and control — engaging deep stabilising muscles that many people have never consciously activated before. In a cold studio, it can take 15–20 minutes of a class before your body is truly warm and ready to access those deeper muscles. With infrared heat, your body is warm from the moment you walk in. Every minute of class is productive.

Is infrared heated pilates safe for beginners?

Yes — and in some ways, it's actually better for beginners than a regular class.

Because the infrared heat warms your muscles before you move, your joints and connective tissues are more supple and less likely to feel tight or resistant. Many beginners find that movements they struggle with at room temperature feel more accessible in an infrared class.

A few things to keep in mind for your first class:

Hydrate well before you arrive. You will sweat more than in a regular pilates class. Drink water throughout the day leading up to your session, and bring a water bottle.

Wear light, breathable activewear. Moisture-wicking fabrics will keep you comfortable. Avoid thick or heavy fabrics.

Towels are mandatory for our heated classes at Dopamine Movement — you can bring your own or rent one for $1 in studio. Grip socks are optional.

Listen to your body. Our instructors will offer modifications throughout the class. There is no expectation that you keep up with experienced members on your first visit. Take breaks when you need to, and ease into the heat gradually.

Most beginners feel the difference after their very first class — a combination of deep muscle fatigue (the good kind) and a surprising sense of calm. After four to six weeks of consistent attendance, the physical changes become visible.

What is a sculpt class?

At Dopamine Movement, our most popular offering is the Heated Sculpt class — a 45-minute session that combines mat pilates principles with weighted resistance work using BALA equipment, all performed in our infrared heated studio.

The goal of sculpt is to build lean, functional muscle through controlled repetitions, holds, and pulses — targeting the arms, core, glutes, and legs in each session. The combination of infrared heat, pilates precision, and BALA resistance creates a uniquely effective workout for body composition — building strength and definition without the bulk associated with heavy lifting.

Our class schedule also includes dedicated strength and mobility sessions for members who want to focus on flexibility, range of motion, and injury prevention alongside their sculpt training.
